Chemical Treatment: Limited Control of Hard Scale

Chemical treatment has no control over the way Calcium Carbonate precipitates, Calcite or other crystal form. It tries to control the formation of Calcium Carbonate by addition of acids and other chemicals which have severe harmful side effects. It requires daily dosing of expensive chemicals and fine balancing of chemistry to ensure no harm comes to the equipment. When the Calcium Carbonate exceeds certain limit, it anyway forms hard scale.

ULF treatment Slashes Risk of Hard Scale

Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) waves in ULF treatment take away the risk of hard scale in a very innovative, patented (Method and device for water treatment using an electromagnetic field) way. The ULF waves promote the formation of a harmless crystal of Calcium Carbonate known as Aragonite. Unlike hard scale, Aragonite does not stick to the condenser tubes and washes away without causing any harm to the tubes.

ULF treatment is electronic and fully controlled via a micro-processor – it requires no human intervention! Typical Installation

A coil is wound on the common header, covering a length of approximately 1 m. The insulation is then put back. This coil is connected to an Electronic Control Unit which generates ULF waves.

Extraordinary Corrosion Protection:
A New Way

When the temperature of water is lower there is more dissolved oxygen in the water. This causes more severe corrosion. Chilled water steel pipelines tend to corrode more than normal water pipelines.

In the chemical treatment the efforts are to control the oxidation of iron to Fe2O3.

ULF treatment uses ULF waves to promote formation of black Magnetite, Fe3O4 instead of normal red rust, Fe2O3, this micro layer of magnetite protects the steel surface from further corrosion. Once the ULF treatment is fitted it protects the steel surface 24x7 without any need for routine monitoring, giving total peace of mind.

Large network of chilled water pipelines, over 2.5 km, are protected by installing ULF treatment only on the common header.

Dramatic Reduction of Dissolved Fe ion

Chilled water is brownish in colour due to corrosion. When corrosion is controlled by ULF treatment the colour of chilled water changes from brown to clear, after a period. Fe ion content, which is an indicator of the corrosion, can be brought down to very low levels. In the case of a large pharma company Fe content was brought down from 60 ppm to less than 1 ppm over a period of just three months and the colour from dark brown to clear water.

Ecospec’s ULF treatment system effectively controls scaling and corrosion in the boiler without utilizing any chemicals. Through the patented Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) wave treatment, aragonite and non-porous magnetite (Fe3O4) are produced. While the non-adhering powdery aragonite is easily removed, unlike the conventional adhering hard calcite scales, magnetite attaches strongly to steel surfaces, acting as a long-term protective layer against corrosion.

This unique system offers both water and energy savings and since no chemical is involved, there is no discharge water quality problems, reducing potential environmental, safety and health issues. Descaling effect in old boilers can be obviously seen from 3rd month after installation.
